I can’t get no sleep

August 9th, 2007

A true story.

At 3am in the morning:

Dan: “Ahem”
Me “Oh God no, not again, wait until tomorrow”
Dan: “Sorry but …”
Me “What is it this time, I need sleep!”
Dan “I was thinking that maybe I should wear a red tie in stead of a blue one.”

Me “And you wake me up for that?”
Dan “It seemed important, Red being the colour of, well, love. Nice visual reference.”
Me “Good point. Turn on the light.”
Dan “I can’t”
Me “What now?!”
Dan “I only exist in your imagination, I can’t turn on the light”
Me “Alright - how useless is that - OK, I pen it down in my notebook and then I want you to disappear from my brain for a couple of hours.”
Dan “Thank you”
Me “Welcome”
Dan “I like red ties.”
Me “Yeah. Go away now. Go. Go.”

10 minutes later

June “I have been thinking - I want more lines”
Me “Jeeez you people. I am supposed to be sleeping!”
June “I know but I want more lines.”
Me “You can’t have more lines”
June “Why not?”
Me “Because the story isn’t about, well, how can I put this, Dan is the main character. We need to focus on him, which means that you can’t have more lines.”
June “That’s not really fair now is it.”
Me “Ehrm, well the lines you have are really good ones, And people will really notice you, I promise”
June “Are you sure?”
Me “Yes, I am sure. You are going to be in the end scene as well, that will be a memorable moment. I’ll make sure you have a really good line there”.
June “That’s the best you can do.”
Me “It is indeed.”
June “OK”
Me “Now, please let me sleep”
June “OK”
Me “Thank You”
June “If you ever do a sequel, do you think I can have more lines then?”
June “Hello?”

Please somebody help me …

Send your haunting thoughts up to the clouds above. Let them be carried away by the breeze. Let your right foot sink deep into the mattress. It is getting all limp and heavy. Relax. Let your right lower leg sink deep into the mattress. It is getting all limp and heavy. Relax. Let your left foot sink deep into the mattress. It is getting all limp and heavy. Relax Let your left lower leg sink deep… I am never getting any further than the hips. By then, I am fast asleep.
But then, after all, the best thoughts often come in the middle of the night…

Red ties are indeed nice! Good choice. I have the same problem - the best ideas pop into your head when you’re trying to sleep.
