and you should! Be proud. Denmark didn’t even make it past the qualifying rounds. We haven’t done anything worth mentioning since 1992.
:) Had not noticed that Denmark was not qualified, shame!! England did not make it past the qualifying rounds either! Well I am proud, but am very cautious to get too carried away, as we haven’t done anything worth mentioning since 1988!
Hells yeah. I think I might get behind the Dutch this tournament.
Ingrid, they say that expats are among the most patriotic. Ironic, isn’t it. That’s part of the background for the DABGO network (http://dabgo.net) for Danish expat professionals.
Anna, it’s not entirely accurate that Denmark hasn’t done anything worth noticing since 1992. In the 1998 World Championships Denmark was inches away from eliminating Brazil in the quarter finals and proceeding to the semifinals. They didn’t make it, but played a great game. Oh, and Oranje played great yesterday and that 1-0 goal was NOT offside.

Everyone is going mad around here. They won their first match against Italy and they’re declared Euro-champpion already by the supporters.
I just can wait till it’s over (and I’m serious about that).

Ik kan me heel goed voorstellen dat je je in Engeland weer even heel erg Nederlands voelt na zo’n prestatie van ons nationale elftal.
Ik had begrepen dat Oranje ook kan rekenen op massale steun van de ‘echte’ Britten. Nu geen enkel Brits team op het EK uitkomt, hopen de Britten dat wij de Europese titel pakken. Dat blijkt uit een peiling van de Britse krant The Guardian. Bijna 50.000 mensen brachten hun stem uit op ons team. Een zeer ruime meerderheid van de deelnemers aan het onderzoek (96,2 procent) schaarde zich achter het Nederlands elftal. Op de tweede plaats eindigde Spanje met een schamele score van 1,8 procent. De derde plek was voor Zweden met 0,4 procent. Hier hebben we in ieder geval een ruime overwinning behaald. Pim Waldeck, de Nederlandse ambassadeur in Groot-Brittannië, was ook in zijn nopjes. Hij liet weten “zeer vereerd te zijn dat een land dat de wieg van het voetbal is” heeft gekozen voor het steunen van Nederland.
Volgende de Britse krant heeft de Nederlandse website GeenStijl de stemming beïnvloedt door campagne te voeren ten gunste van het Nederlands elftal. Volgens The Guardian maakt het echter niets uit. Nederland zou toch wel gewonnen hebben. Aan het eind van het artikel in de Britse krant wordt ons nationale team ook door de redacteur aangemoedigd: “Now get out there and bring back that trophy. “Hup Holland Hup!” as we say in the orange section”.
Oh well done them!
