Premiere weekend for the new Sparkle movie, written and directed by Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger who made The Lawless Heart.
Sparkle is an absolute delight to watch, and it has a fantastic cast.
Bob Hoskins (who took over from Bill Nighy due to a very long preproduction process and Bill being attached to Pirates) is so absolutely adorable in this film.
And there is Anthony Head who is always a delight to watch. Then there cute boy Shaun Evans, and a surprising (very wellplayed though) role by Stockard Channing who played Rizzo in Grease a life time (nearly 30 years!) ago.
Both Anthony Head and Bob Hoskins deserved more screen time (or maybe that’s just me, I think they are both amazing actors, and more interesting to watch than the overly blue-eyed cute main character), and the first 20 minutes of the film is too slow. Apart from that, it’s sparkling, the characters are well developed and have enough quirkiness to make them believable.
After the movie there was a Q&A with both the directors and the cast, which is always interesting.
See it? Yup!
In the mean time, due to problems with my digital tv box (everything seems to go down this weekend) I am re-enjoying State of Play. Bill, Kelly MacDonald and John Simm together in a thriller, and that for 6 hours, sparkles guaranteed here too. And the lovely thing about seeing it again, the last time I saw it I still lived in Denmark, it’s even more fun to watch it recognizing all the locations in London it has been shot in.
