The Girl in the Cafe around the world

Lawrence - Bill Nighy - The Girl in the Cafe

Will she ever stop? I don’t know. I have recently received email from new participants from Spain and the UK, so people still seem interested. As long as she is comfortable traveling, I will let her do so.

Several people have written reviews, step inside to read them.

If you have no idea what I am talking about – please go here.

The Girl in the Cafe on tour – and more G8 Bill Nighy

It must be a perfect moment to have a post about The Girl In The Cafe on tour, seeing as another important G8 meeting is held in Japan as we speak.

Now just in case you don’t remember what it was all about, here is a message from your Uncle Bill, as he can explain it much better than I can.

And let’s face it, he is also much groovier than I am.

More Bill:
Bill has also written a post on the Oxfam International blog about his experiences in Japan.

And Bill’s (and many other Oxfam ambassadors’) letter to the G8 can be read here.

And more on OXFAM.

OK so now you are up to date. The Girl in the Cafe, the film, is about the same things. And my DVD of this great film has been travelling for quite a while now to far away places (as you can see on the world map)

The DVD has visited 69 people around the world, and new participants are signing up regularly, with Greece, Singapore and Wales being new destinations.

And there are new reviews from a couple of people who participated.

The Girl In The Cafe – on tour

The answer is no. Too much Bill is a contradictio in terminus.

I was going to write a one line post today:

“The only successful marriage I had was me and my work.”

Because I really don’t have much of a life at the moment. I am juggling between finishing our short film (we spend the whole weekend on it again – except for the 3 hour Pirate break – but we are getting there), rewriting my script and then there is my full time job. We are clinging on to the fact that the deadline for the short is the 11th of February, we will probably fall into hibernation for a week or two after that – but after that we will slowly get our life back.

As a result the energy to write lively blog posts is fairly low at the moment, I apologize.

Good I remembered that I have 2 reviews of The Girl In The Cafe that were due to be posted. So go and read them, one is from Laura in London, the other one from Marcello in Dubai.

A big Thank you to both of them for placing another marker on the map.

The Girl continues her travel, also in 2008

The Girl In The Cafe on tourA short update on the on The Girl in the Cafe project.

I love people who love Bill Nighy. And I actually love all people who take the time and the energy to participate in this project, who write those beautiful personal reviews on the film and who pass the film on to the next person. I hope the film will continue its journey, also in 2008. May the Girl have a safe travel.

Here are some clips from the latest reviews, click on their names to read the full reviews on their websites.

The Girl In The Cafe – on tour

Bill Nighy - Lawrence - The Girl in the Cafe

It will always be my favourite subject to write about, and it’s also an excellent excuse to post a picture that hasn’t anything to do with New York. Not directly anyway.

Here is an update on the project.

The Girl is currently staying in Luxembourg, the UK and the US. And while I thought the end of the tour was in sight, the list of participants is growing again, with recent sign ups from Dubai, Edinburgh and London added to the map and the list.

I also received 2 new reviews, one from Robert in Croatia, and one from Robin and Hannah in the UK. A big thank you to the both of them for writing them and for participating.

Two new New York pictures in the photoblog:

Step in for the reviews, they deserve to be read.

The Girl in the Cafe – the tour

With recent sign ups from both Washington and Amsterdam (update: and London and Australia), there doesn’t seem to come an end to the travel of The Girl. She is heading for another US and UK tour soon.

The Girl has also been in New Zealand, visiting Mark, and has just visited Slovenia too.

Mark wrote a fantastic review. He saw the film with 16(!) of his friends and they all loved it.

Do step inside to read his review, it made me jump with joy. And I suddenly got a brilliant idea when I read it, I will tell you more about that soon.

A big Thank You to Mark for writing this.

Have a look at the worldmap here, and if you want to signup, please go here. It’s free, and the rules are easy:
See the film.
Write about it.
Pass i(t) on.

The Girl in Brazil

The Girl In The CafeThe Girl is still travelling, and is currently staying with Andy in Brazil. (Brazil: lucky girl!) Andy is about to send her off to the UK and has just written his review. Yes I know it is in Portuguese, Google helps a bit translating it into some form of English (Babelfish does a much better job! Just enter the URL) which I am sure loses all the details of the article. But looking at this language I do not understand, looking at the picture of Bill and Kelly in a place that still is dear to me in this post surrounded by words and just the fact that this crazy idea made it this far around the world already, well that makes me happy.

The Girl In The Cafe travels

The Girl In The CafeFirstly, a long due update about the The Girl In The Cafe DVD on tour project.

The Girl DVD is still touring, and currently on her way to Brazil, Germany and New Zealand. People are friendly enough to send the Girl to the next person, but writing reviews seems to have been a bigger problem. The last few weeks some reviews related to the project have been written and you can read them here:

Kate’s smudges (Canada)

Clare / Bookarazzi (UK)

And Richard sent me the following by mail:

This unusual love story has touched me. A love story between a high ranking bureaucrat (Lawrence) and a girl next door, or as you like, a girl next bar (Gina). Somehow it felt hard to believe that such different people could ever met. Well, erm they did. Of course the overall message is clear, as the film rolls out. Lawrence is preparing his part for the summit of the G8. As he tells Gina about the G8, she became more and more outspoken about the upcoming conference. This causes trouble for Lawrence. But she opened eyes for those who couldn’t see…

In the end I wanted to fall in love too. That, to me, is a huge compliment for a film

Richard

A big thank you to all three for taking the time to write.

The Girl In The Cafe – still on tour

Bill Nighy as Lawrence in The Girl In The Cafe
A post very much due (excuses for the wait to the people who have contributed!).

First, here is another clip of Bill Nighy’s trip to Tanzania, where he clearly explains why he thinks aid is a good thing, and that it in fact works on the places he visited.

I have received 4 reviews from people who particpated in the The Girl on tour:

  • Tony from the UK (Bill Nighy obsession, me? What’s he on about?)
  • Jacqui from France
  • Naomi from the US (yes I know I Capture the Castle, I saw it again tonight actually, I love it and James Mortmain)
  • Joachim from Germany (who has an interesting take on it all, as Germany has just been hosting another G8 meeting)

Four different reviews, 4 different opinions. Very interesting.

The Girl is currently on her way to Hawaii, Canada, and has just arrived in Zagreb, Croatia.
How international can it get? I love this project.

I seduce you with my eyebrow

I seduce you with my eyebrowOh God not him again, I hear you think. Well as I recently have been hanging out on websites realizing that I am not the only one having issues I might as well just openly come out with it. As I felt the need to throw some Bill in between all those Alan’s I hacked together this funky avatar. The picture makes me laugh. A lot. And I like to be pathetically not-grown-up sometimes. It keeps you young.

Apart from that, this post is supposed to be about The Girl on tour too, so he is not completely out of context here. And it’s also about joining a writers group. And about how M&S toffee mousse tastes.

The Girl In The Cafe

I received a couple of good e-mails the last few days which is something that always makes me happy. Most of them were related to the Girl on tour which is an ongoing logistic planning project, but if I could do it full time I would quit my job right here right now to do it.

There is a very well written review in here, so go on, jump in.

Happy New Year and a lot of loose ends

Chinese New Year
China in London

The nice thing about living in London is it’s diversity in cultures. There is a rather big Chinese community in London, and yesterday was the celebration of the Chinese New Year. The Year of the Pig has now officially started. The streets look beautiful with the red lanterns and there are a lot of activities going on the coming days. A good way to get an introduction to China before actually going there.

One downside of this is if you happened to have booked a trip to China quite a short while ago. Normal people would prepare that some time in advance so there is time to get all the visa’s in place. Other people, people who don’t think that much about things, don’t prepare at all. And then it can happen that you find out that it’s the Chinese New Year, which is an important celebration for the Chinese, so important that the Chinese Embassy decided to close for a few days.

The same Chinese embassy that was supposed to take care of my visa?
Yes them exactly.

Live your life with passion and your heart will sing

Bill Nighy - Lawrence - straightening his tie
This is so true.
Despite the fact that it is Valentine’s day, a day single people tend to hate, and I am no exception.

And you can keep your cards with “I LOVE YOU”, your Sainsbury’s Taste the difference spring milk chocolates in a heart shaped box, your Marks and Spencers Organza Heart with Heart Truffles, your romantic spa weekend for two and your shared bank account. And you think yeah, that’s what any pathetic single girl would say. I hear you, but I actually mean it. Not only because I still don’t understand the concept – why do we need a specially assigned day to say “I love you”? Say it as often as you can. All year around.

And apart from all that – I would really rather fall off my chair.
Lucky, as that was exactly what happened.

Eternal ramblings from a messed up mind III

The Girl In The Cafe - DVD

10 people died because of the storm here in the UK yesterday. The train traffic was disrupted in London because of it, but I somehow managed to move around it all. One of the men who died, died in Shropshire. Which made me think about Oliver Lucas in The Vertical Hour again, as he lived in Shropshire as well. A minor spot on the map, and if it hadn’t been for that play I would never ever have known about Shropshire at all. Now I do, I even looked it up on the map when I got home. And suddenly it is weird to hear that someone died of the storm there.
