I have been to quite some concerts, but this definetely was one of the best ever, if not the best. I once saw a concert with Jamie Cullum on tv, and I admit, that you quickly can get the impression that he is one spoiled brat. The way he is moving around stage, his jumping from his piano, his dancing around on stage and all that. But giving the guy a second chance – this is not a spoiled boy. This is an extraordinary musician with the passion for his music running through his veins. And I happen to like people with passion.

All the fine people of Århus came to this concert, in their nice clothes. The musichall was sold out, and I was curious about where this was going. After half an hour, the men had taken of their jackets, all women were screaming and everybody was standing and dancing and clapping. There was this rare connection between the artist and his audience, and I am sure that everybody could sense that, both on and in front of the stage. There was truly magic in the air.

Yes Jamie is a Londoner. And yes I would have bought a t-shirt, if they had accepted credit cards, but they did not. And no this wasn’t the last time I have seen him live, that’s for sure.

A 10/10 for this concert.

I joined a theatre group in London (just got the confirmation today), and while I could use some more than 32 days to get all the practicals things in place here in Denmark, I wish I was in London tomorrow to get started with this group.

This is what “we” are going to do:

Initially we’ll be doing various confidence and ice breaking games and adding in improvisation, script reading and then working towards rehearsing a script. With a potentially large group we’ll be breaking up in to smaller groups on the night to allow more experienced people to work together or to lead smaller groups of less experienced people and this will help us integrate people as they join us.

The intention of this group is to provide a fun, sociable outlet for people with an interest in drama and to make it comfortable for those with no experience in drama to find out what it’s like whilst also giving some great opportunities to those with more experience. The plan is to consider a number of opportunities including producing an internet film, a stage show in a Notting Hill theatre (there are a couple) and also starting a group for those wanting more serious amateur dramatics activity.

Outside of the normal drama group nights we’re looking at organising going to see a BBC production being filmed as part of the audience, theatre previews and once we’re established I’ll be inviting experienced directors, actors and other talent to come and talk to the group.

I simply can’t wait to get to London, and I will join the group on the 14th February (which is becoming an even more important day now). After that 2 weeks back to Denmark, to definetely join them the beginning of March.

I pressed play and am currently, well you know what I am doing. And the smile on my face is huge.

The bad news is, there isn’t any official soundtrack available. But the good news is that you can find the 2 songs that make up 90% of the soundtrack of this film.

2 songs from the soundtrack of the Girl of the Cafe that made an everlasting impression:

Sigur Ros – Starálfur (islandic for Staring Elf) from the album ágætis byrjun (”an alright start”). (Download Starálfur free and legal from Sigur Ros’ website : click here).

The song that’s playing as they walk down the corridor to the hotel room on their first night in Reykjavik is ‘Somewhere there’s an Island’ by Seaman Dan. You can hear a sample of it here.

The beautiful movie soundtrack is composed by Nicholas Hooper, who also will compose music for the upcoming Harry Potter movie : Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Nicholas Hooper has also composed music for other Nighy delights like State of Play and The Young Visiters.

Nicholas Hooper won a BAFTA Award in 2006 for Best Original Music for The Girl In The Cafe.

Kevin Spacey - Beyond The Sea

Sometimes you run into a movie, and it just blows you away. The Girl In The Cafe was one (oh really ? Yeah you didn’t know that did you) and today I saw Beyond the Sea. And if I didn’t already have a slight crush on Kevin Spacey, I certainly would have one now. Beyond the Sea is telling the story about the life of Bobby Darin, an american entertainer, singer and actor.

Kevin Spacey directed and produced this film. And apart from that he plays the main character Bobby Darin. And Kevin is just as spacey as Bill is, if there is going to be any singing in a film he is in, he is going to do it himself. Resulting in Kevin singing all the songs himself accompanied by a big band, and what a fantastic singer he is ! And if that wasn’t enough to get me glued to the screen, he is one hell of a dancer too. The girl definetely likes actors that can dance and sing well, and are sharpdressed doing it. And actors that are passionate, and Kevin Spacey is one.

It’s not a typical biography film, it’s more like a tribute from Spacey (being a fan of Darin) to Bobby Darin. But absolutely worthwhile seeing.

Robbie Williams go home. Swing with Spacey, then you’re winning.

The Office guys

5 things about the Office:

  • It’s the (re) discovery of Martin Freeman (Tim). I suddenly understand why girls find him cute, because he really is cute in the Office. And after having seen him here, both Love Actually (a christmas neccesity) and Hitchhikers Guide are a lot more fun to watch !
  • The office in The Office looks scaringly much like the office I have been working in, in Birmingham, in a company called The Birmingham Waste Co. Ltd. They might as well have filmed it there, because apart from the David Brent type, all other types were present, a blond secretary called Dawn (!), same style of office, same atmosphere. And they were in the paper industry too, not buying paper like in The Office, but buying and selling waste paper, which is probably worse. Both the Office and The Birmingham Office are not the type of places I want to work in London. Well The Office maybe, but I would probably die laughing.
  • I want some of David Brents unrockable confidence
  • It’s more cringing than Extras if you ask me
  • I haven’t laughed this much about television since – i don’t even remember since when.

Dit is macrogeluk : Én Bill Nighy én Kelly MacDonald genomineerd voor een Golden Globe award voor beste acteur / actrice in dé beste film van 2005 : The Girl In The Cafe.
Als ie hem wint geef ik een feestje. Als ie hem niet wint (de concurrenten zijn tough : Donald Sutherland, Ed Harris, Kenneth Branagh en Jonathan Rhys Meyers) – klaag ik ze aan, de Globes.

De Awards show wordt 16 januari 2006 uitgezonden.

Als u hem nog steeds niet gezien hebt, tja dan heeft u wat gemist.

En dus kocht ik een kaartje voor het Sigur Ros concert. Thanks to Bill, want had ik de film niet gezien, had ik ze waarschijnlijk nooit ondekt. En laten we eerlijk zijn Takk is wel de beste plaat van 2005, en Staralfur, het allermooiste liedje ooit gemaakt.

Ricky Gervais was wat mij betreft al een van de grappigste mannen die ik ken, nu wordt ie nog cool ook. Vanaf 5 december gaat Ricky wekelijks een speciale podcast show maken, die exclusief vanaf the Guardian te downloaden is. Er worden 12 afleveringen gemaakt.

Ricky will finally tackle the big questions such as: “Jellyfish – do we need them”? And: “Why do you never see an old bloke eating a Twix”?

Wat ik wel en niet wil

Stuiterende ballen
Ik had er nog geen postje aan gewijdt, maar bij deze. Als ik in de bioscoop zit vind ik het normaal gesproken niet erg om het eerste half uur door reklame en trailers voor komende films heen te moeten.

Maar daar heeft H&M voorgoed verandering in gebracht met hun ellendige irritante H & M soulful jeans Romeo & Julia commercial. Dit reklame filmpje duurt minstens 4 minuten, wordt gezongen door Mary J. Blige en is de meest misselijkmakende, kleffe, overdreven, idiote, irriterende reklame die ik in lange tijd gezien heb. Genoeg reden voor mij om voorlopig niet in de H & M te komen. Zo erg dus.

En ik ben niet de enige.

Wat ik wel wil zien, op het reuze scherm in de Cinemaxx : De stuiterballen van de Bravia reklame, die mogen ze rustig 10 minuten laten stuiteren voor de film begint. Ik was er bijna zeker van dat het montage was, maar ze hebben echt 250.000 stuiterballen door de straten van San Fransico laten stuiteren. Dit brilliante idee kwam overigens van de deense regisseur Nicolai Fuglsig. En er zit nog hele mooie muziek onder ook. Bijna een reden alleen om naar de bioscoop te gaan, deze reklame.

Kicks voor niks

Pop Art B.Fantastisch, mijn kaart lag er nog toen S. vorige week in London het Theatre Museum bezocht. Netjes onder de stapel boeken in het winkeltje. En bedenk hoeveel honderden, duizenden (?) mensen daar intussen langs gelopen waren, nietsvermoedend en zonder hem te hebben gevonden.

Na de trip Århus-London is de kaart met het vliegtuig inmiddels overgebracht van London naar Massachusetts, USA. Gisteren sprak ik S. op messenger, en ze vond het fantastisch dat de kaart er nog lag. Kicks voor niks.

Mission Accomplished en closed. Wat zal ik nu weer eens bedenken.

Voor de nieuwsgierigen onder u – de kaart (S. is zoals gezegd ook een B. fan)- het was een van de 4 van mijn in een verloren uurtje gefotosjopte mini Pop Art Bill Warhol Tribute.

Wat ik me overigens nog het meest herinner van die dag van de kaart, is dat ik op Covent Garden market stond, geleund tegen een van de grote pilaren, gezellig druk met mensen, vlak bij de opera, en de zon in mijn gezicht. En precies daar op dat moment wist ik dat het wel goed zat.

Pfew. (it just arrived in my inbox – it’s from the upcoming Underworld Evolution, which probably is just as bad as Underworld I, but that doesn’t matter at all when they have heroes like this walking around in it.)

Richard II in Old Vic

Kevin Spacey - Richard II Ik kocht het kaartje enkel en alleen voor Kevin Spacey, wist bijna niets van Shakespeare en al helemaal niets van Richard II. Ik las het stuk in het engels, maar het oude engels was zo moeilijk te volgen dat ik opgaf. Ik vreesde er niet veel van te kunnen volgen.

Maar dat viel allemaal erg mee. Het was gedeeltelijk in het oud engels, maar met uiterste concentratie was het goed te volgen. Kevin begon in een prachtig paars fluwelen koningdracht met kroon en juwelen, maar dat werd al snel omgewisseld voor moderne Armani pakkken. (Kevin in een suit, je zag de damesharten smelten). Het verhaal speelde ook in een moderne setting met een prachtig decor, en moderne zaken als mobieltelefoons en lcd schermen.

En langzaam werd ik het verhaal in getrokken. Hoofdzakelijk door het fantastisch acteerwerk van vooral Kevin Spacey. Ik vind hem magisch in bijna al zijn speelfilms. En hier stond ie, in levende lijve op nog geen 6 meter af stand van mij op het podium. Surreal but nice !

En theater is anders dan film, het moet in een keer goed, en het is meer intens. Afgezien van Kevin was Richard II ook een aangrijpend stuk, en dus echt aan te bevelen. Spacey speelt tot eind november, en komt terug in een nieuw stuk in Old Vic in het najaar van 2006. Ik kijk er nu al naar uit. Kevin is cool.

Ik vermaak me hier meer dan uitstekend.

Wat is dit voor onzin. Wie denkt B. wel niet dat hij is ? En afgezien van dat, op z’n 56 ste nog rondlopen met lang haar en een ridderpak ? Come on, get real, dat is pathetisch, dat weet jij ook. Dat kun je niet serieus nemen.
Ik stel voor dat we volgende week wat afspreken en hier even over praten. Wat met dinsdag, 1. november, om 16.00 uur in K?benhavn ? Laat ik je meteen de nieuwe cd even horen. En ik zie je natuurlijk in London.

In tegenstelling tot de enorme hoeveelheid onzin die u hier de afgelopen tijd heeft gelezen (die 2 lezers die ik nog heb), is de afspraak echt. En dus leende ik maar vast een MD recorder op mijn werk, want als S. praat hoor ik alles wel maar als ik dan in de trein naar huis zit kan ik me niets meer herinneren van wat ie gezegd heeft, omdat ik zo starstruck was. Nog steeds. Ik ken mezelf.

Het wordt een goede week, zondag word ik gefixed door Chris in Kopenhagen, dinsdag een afspraak met S. en donderdag naar London. Eindelijk.

En B. vraagt u ? B. werd gisteren genomineerd voor Best Actor in a Supporting Role (British Independent Film Awards) voor zijn rol in The Constant Gardener. The Constant Gardener is genomineerd voor 7 BIFA’s inkl. beste film, beste acteur (Ralph Fiennes), beste actrice (Rachel Weisz) en beste regisseur (Fernando Meirelles). Zeg niet dat ik u niet gewaarschuwd heb !

Misschien moet ik eind november ook nog maar een weekendje London doen dan.

What do you mean the-I-go-to-London-barometer is down a few points ! After this silly musicvideo ? You can’t be serious, that would be too easy. And this S. guy, he isn’t that groovy and he can’t sing, let alone dance. It’s an easy trick, looking in the camera like that, smiling, you know how it is. Even I could do that, no wait, I could do that better.

To get things back on track again I send you this picture. Check my hair and check my suit. Black and white is soooo 80’s.
I would expect the-I-go-to-London-barometer to be up again over 90% very soon.

Daniel 007 CraigWoei, da’s een interessant nieuwtje, de nieuwe James Bond wordt Daniel Craig, en ik persoonlijk vind dat een uitermate verrassende maar uitstekende keuze!

Daniel Craig is waarschijnlijk niet de meest bekende engelse acteur, maar ik ken hem van Enduring Love, een soort fatal attraction maar dan anders. Spannend, en best een aardige cast. Daniel Craig maakte in ieder geval indruk. Rhys Iffans speelt Glen Close, and Daniel Craig Michael Douglas. En in de bijrollen, ach u weet wel waarom ik deze film heb gezien.

Daniel Craig wordt de eerste blonde Bond, als schijnt het wel een wat donkere Bond film te worden. Q en Moneypenny zijn uit het script verdwenen van Casino Royal, de eerste film die Craig gaat inspelen.
