Travel plans – version 1 – I need your help!
It has been a while since I have been on a far (ok further) away trip, so this year I have decided to cross some items of my “would love to see” list.
(Here is a bigger version of the map on Google)
But I need your help dear readers.
But first, the plan. Here are the places I want to visit:
1. Boston
I want to go to Boston to do a Whale watching boat trip. I have long been wanting to see whales from up close and Boston seems to be a perfect place for it.
I also want to do this Lighthouse tour, this area is about an hour north of Boston.
But apart from that, is Boston worth a visit?
2. Niagara Falls
I want to do the Maid of the Mist tour and just see these impressive falls. (Am planning to stay here for one day and then move on)
3. Chicago
I don’t know anything about Chicago, but it is just one of these places that sound so familiar.
Question to you reader: is it worth visiting? And what to see there?
4. San Francisco
I know what I want to see here: the Golden Gate bridge. And it is on the coast, so I am sure there is a beach too. And light houses.
And there is some more whale watching to do here as well. Wait a minute, do I actually need to go to Boston at all?
Has any of you ever been in San Francisco? What area is good to stay? And what to see and do there? How much time would you spend here?
5. Los Angeles
This is a bit the same thing as Chicago. I have heard the name so many times before. I know they have the “HOLLYWOOD” letters on the hill there. But is Los Angeles worth a visit? What to see and do there? How much time would you spend here?
Any tips and hints and comments are highly appreciated!

I can hear you think – where is New York on the map! I know, I know, but Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman did not have time to see me before November, so New York is scheduled then. Honestly, I am not even sure I will survive watching both Craig and Jackman on one stage.
Cameras, cancelled moves and the coast
Just a small practical anouncement: I am not moving to Notting Hill. I removed the previous post, I am not getting into any details, it is just not going to happen. Not now anyway, I will keep my eyes open for other chances.
I bought a new pocket camera, a Panasonic T4. It replaces my Canon Ixus, a camera I have never been happy about. The Panasonic is small enough to fit in your pocket, has 10x zoom and I have been giving it a test drive the last couple of days.
Both in London, and today on a trip to the Eastbourne coast. It did remarkably well. The built in image stabilization really works well and I haven’t been able to get shaky pictures yet. That’s something new after the Canon. Click on the images for the full size!

And the new art work in front of the Channel 4 building. I like the colourful umbrellas. They had to repair it after a windy day, some of the umbrellas didn’t survive.

Dogs, sea, blue sky and a lighthouse
A perfect weekend is:
This is Smeaton’s tower, a lighthouse located on the Plymouth Hoe. The lighthouse is no longer in use as a lighthouse, and this is not it’s original location – it has been moved here from Eddystone Rocks in 1877.
It is open for the public and you can climb the 97 steps to a perfect view over Plymouth and the sea.
Lighthouses, dogs, and Bill
Some random bits before I leave for Christmas (which is not before Wednesday):
- I need to buy a present for those two slime monsters. I am going to spent some days with them in Ireland after Christmas and I am sure we will be even better friends if I bring them a dog pressie. They are lovely dogs.
The next week or two will be very dog filled as my mum is currently baby sitting my brother’s few months old chihuahua. They are small dogs but they are ubercute, actually (check out that heart on his back!). Maybe I should buy him a little gift too.
I think it is fair to expect some dog pictures when I come back.
- He grooves me out. And it’s a really great cause.
- And what are those lighthouses doing there you wonder? I apologize, I am still in Illustrator mode. It will pass.
Weymouth, Portland Bill, Durdle Door
The view from my B&B room in Weymouth Saturday morning around 8am (yes zoom lens and a room with sea view very close to the beach). It didn’t look very promising so we headed to a cafe for a coffee and the Saturday Guardian. I think the dogs are more depressed because of the ridiculous jackets they are wearing than because of the rain.

I think it is fair to conclude that the English south coast is beautiful no matter where you go. The same goes for the light houses!

Lighthouse Lunatic
With a long bank holiday approaching last Friday and the weather being lovely, I decided to escape London, again, and impulsively booked myself into a friendly B&B in Dover.
Pause a while and muse
A train at 9.47am on a Sunday morning – after a short night and weather that could not be more depressing – demanded a lot of willpower. But I had my book and the prospect of a train trip, and even if it was going to be rain all day, that was enough to have me leave my bed and hop on board to Eastbourne. The BBC promised heavy showers all day.
While approaching Eastbourne it magically cleared up and the grey clouds turned into sunshine and while setting a first few steps on a very steep hill in the direction of Beachy Head I discovered a couple of things:
I really need to work on my condition
Love never ends
and most importantly
I live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
