Winter warmth

Winter warmth

Send to a friend

I was drawing this yesterday night, and this morning I read the news article that seems to fit perfectly with it. A little warmth in the dark and cold times of winter and economic crises.

Two German children – aged five and six – have been stopped by police from eloping to Africa to tie the knot in the sun, reports say.

The budding lovebirds, identified as Mika and Anna-Lena, packed bathing costumes, sunglasses and a lilo and headed for the airport.

They even had the presence of mind to invite along an official witness – Anna-Lena’s seven-year-old sister.

The three got as far as Hanover railway station before police intervened.

The young couple were “very much in love” and had decided to get married in Africa “where it is warm”, police spokesman Holger Jureczko told the AFP news agency.

How cute is that!

Love – the musical, Lyric theatre Hammersmith – review

LOVE - the musical

I can’t remember how I stumbled upon this, but I blindly bought a ticket on the title and poster alone. No regrets about that I can say.

Yesterday I saw Love – the Musical. And how refreshing to watch actors that are passed 60 and I think, without insulting any of them, some of them were passed 70 too. It was clear they enjoyed this play, and it was a huge cast!

The story was sweet:

Neville is approaching eighty and slowly wasting away in an unremarkable care home in a small English town. His life seems to be heading for an end until Margaret arrives. Brought in by her son for a short stay, Margaret is terrified of what will happen to her — until she meets Neville and he suggests they escape for a night out on the town…

There is a lot of singing going on, a lot of modern songs and it was a joy to hear them performed by people of this age.

I heard Blur, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Verve, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and many more.

I laughed and I cried. And was shocked and surprised when the old man with the rollator who seemed to live in his own world most of the time, suddenly started singing too. But mostly I enjoyed watching them, trying not to think too much about where I will be when I am that age.

It reminded my of Awakenings, the wonderful film with Robert de Niro and Robin Williams and I can highly recommend this play.

I only make jokes to distract myself

Zero7 - Distractions

Let’s start this week quietly.
With a song about me. And you.
I can’t quite figure out if this is a hopeful song or just a realistic one.
But it is one of the most beautiful songs I know, and I have played it nearly all weekend while sitting in cafes trying to figure out how to get the two people in my script together.

And it is the song I’m going to play for my boyfriend.
When I’ve, y’know: met him.
(Shamelessly inspired by @pauldwaite)

Sound no longer available …

So what song are you going to play for your boyfriend/girlfriend, when you’ve, you know, met him/her?

From the truth, from the truth.

(Zero 7 – Distractions)

Dreaming with a broken heart

Dreaming with a broken heart

I feel mean. In my script I have to break up two people and while the woman doesn’t truly love the man she is with, he has been kind and true and he really loves her. What did he do to deserve this? Nothing really. Life just can be cruel sometimes.

But it results in beautiful songs like these.

(Still no internet at home, hence the short post. Lucky you. DIRL: 9.)

Let my love open the door

I picked it up, walked to the counter to pay and suddenly realized how pathetic it must have looked. I wanted to say – this is going to be a prop for my short – it is not for Valentine’s day – but I didn’t say anything. I just paid and walked out – with my new red heart shaped bowl. It is a great prop. And the wooden man (a New Yorker who lives with me) agreed with me totally.

The silver coloured heart in the bottom has a chime inside. I bought it in a shop in Notting Hill because I really like the sound and shape, and because it might be a prop too. I didn’t buy it because I am obsessed with hearts or anything, you know me better than that.

I saw Dan in real life again today in the Chelsea cinema. I love this film so much, it’s funny and touching and I laughed a lot and cried and I think Steve Carell is so adorable in this film. The fact that I know the soundtrack inside out made it an even bigger pleasure to watch. I apologize to all other viewers for singing along in the cinema and I want a soundtrack like that if I ever get my film made.

Love+Rock: Change the world

Love+Rock: If I could change the world
(Her legs seem to be growing, she is unconsciously turning into a lanky girl. Nothing wrong with lanky people though, on the contrary)

Blame Bill for reading Eric. And Eric for singing this song.

I saw And when did you last see your father with Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent this weekend. This is one of those movies where not that much happens but it gets to you anyway. Jim Broadbent is playing Colin’s dad, he gets terminally ill and the film is about the last period of his life. About looking back and talking about things that have been left unspoken for a lifetime.

Love Actually, in a box

Love Actually, in a box

I was wandering around the market on Portobello Road again. Mainly because it was lunch time and the weather is so nice at the moment, but also because I was trying to get some pictures of the market for Kate, as she asked for it a while ago (and I am happy to answer to everybody’s photo requests). Did you know that last week both Posh Spice (Ms. Beckham – and who cares) and Justin Timberlake (am not a major fan, but wouldn’t mind spilling my cup of orange juice on his shirt while I come around the corner with it …) have been spotted walking on the loose on Portobello Road?

The pictures I took are not great (taken with my mobile phone), Hugh Grant is not on them, but it gives some sort impression of what it looks like: Notting Hill, Portobello Market on a Friday afternoon in the summer: Portobello Market 1 and number 2.

I am not that big a fan of Flickr, but it is very handy to post to with my mobile while I am on the move. And what I do like is that you can plot your pictures on a map. Here is mine.

While I was taking those pictures, I stumbled over Love, Actually again. This time I found Love in a carton box, for only £1,50.
Sure sounds cheap to me …

I am currently in this mode again, because I have one, and maybe even 2 interesting things to tell you, but I am waiting for a confirmation. So you have to wait with me.

In the mean time: I hope you’re not completely tired of my Love Actually obession just yet. Because I am afraid there is more to come. At least this time I won’t ask you if you ever bought love, for 1.50.

Love Actually, in a tree

Love Actually, in a tree on the heath

They still exist, the true romantics.

“Ah love, a dreaded bond, yet so easily severed …”

And then there are those that are more sceptical.

This picture is taken on Hampstead Heath, and I expect the carvings to be several years old.
Did they live happily ever after I wonder.

Have you ever carved the name of your loved one in a tree?

Is it Love Actually

(Written: New York, 33rd St – Picture: New York, 5th Ave)

While I drink my Milky Way tea in the Starbucks right beside the Empire State Building (and let’s be honest there are worse places to drink your tea – behind your computer screen at work just to name one) I read (or rather greedily indulge) my new book:

Writing the Romantic Comedy.

Sold out in Waterstones London, but Barnes & Noble in New York luckily had it. And even if you have no intention of becoming a screen writer, if you love romantic comedies this book is like chocolate cake with cream and a little red cherry on top.

While reading – a girl sits down at a table next to me.

On the other hand

She : Lip piercing in the middle of her lip, and a tongue piercing.

He: weird metal pins in the back of his neck.
A huge ring in his ear, not on, but in, he had an enormous hole in his left ear.
Tongue piercing. And 2 very sticky and sharp pins coming out of his underlip, and pointing out.

They were obviously very in love, actually.

But how do they do it.

Kiss.

I mean.

(Oh, and dear readers, I have been incredibly stupid. Nothing new there. The last picture I uploaded to my photoblog, the colourful one of 2 chairs in St. James Park, well I have accidently deleted it (because it was on Bill’s site – accident 2 – and deleted it from there not knowing I didn’t make a local copy). How stupid is that. If anyone has this picture in his or hers browser cache, I would be incredibly grateful if you could send it over. I might even give you, ehrm, a kiss if you do. This is cleared with Davy by the way, so don’t worry. Filename is stjamespark.png).

The Romcom aspect of the whole story

Well now, don’t think that there isn’t anything happening on the romantic front. There is.
There has been love flowering by the counter for people with under 5 items.
And I actually already found a very nice Londoner. And he loves me, unconditionally. I am a bit overwhelmed by his attention, I am not used to all this anymore. He looks at me all the time with his deep dark brown eyes while I try to concentrate on writing job applications. He doesn’t leave my side, and better he wants to sit on my lap all the time.

We haven’t talked much yet, but we understand each other completely. Sometimes words are not necessary, especially not when we are talking unconditional love.

I don’t even know his name yet, but until I do, I just call him Bill.

Oh there he is, he just entered the room. So if you’ll excuse me, I have some loving to do.
