The Girl on Tour – Hawaii would be nice

Bill Nighy - Lawrence in The Girl In The Cafe

What is that man doing here you wonder? I think we have looked at Will Ferrell and Daniel Craig long enough now haven’t we. And we are in the middle of a small update on The Girl In The Cafe on tour project, so it is completely legitimate.

Things are going a bit slower here around the Christmas time. One DVD is currently in Holland but those people seem to have gone on holiday, her twin sister has just arrived at soyouthinkican‘s house in the States. To make things a little bit more exotic for the Girl, Hawaii has just been added to the list of planned destinations. She likes that I can tell you. I might jump in the envelope with her when she is going there, I mean, Hawaii! I envy her a bit, she is going places I have never been.

If you want to be added to the list, please read here and join. If you want to know where she is going or has been check here.

Paul in Spain saw the film, loved it, and wrote a wonderful review. A big thank you for that! Read More

11 countries

The Girl on tour
USA, Netherlands, Denmark, Scotland, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Portugal.

I had no idea when I started this that she was going to travel this far. And despite some hickups along the way, people have been very kind to keep their promises of writing a review and making sure that she was send off to the next person on the list. Another good thing: nearly all people who already have been visited by her loved her.

I hope more countries will follow, having a representative of all G8 countries on the list would be fantastic.

Where the heck is the DVD?

Lawrence (Bill Nighy), at the G8 in the Girl In The Cafe

A short update for the people on the list on the whereabouts of the Girl DVD.

One DVD is in Denmark, but after he did write a review I never heard from the person again, so I hope he is alright. Since this has been quite a while ago, I have decided to send the DVD to the next person myself. That has been done yesterday, so hopefully the girl will arrive in Aarhus shortly, before she takes off to Australia, and after that to the USA. At last, I know people over there are waiting for her !

The other girl is currently staying in Belgium, she is very fine, and will be travelling back to Holland one of these days.

So the project is still very alive, and to the people waiting on the list, please be patient, she is on her way!

Want to join the project ? Just step over here, and go for it.

TGITC and 3 emmy’s

The Americans just gave her 3 Emmy’s (Best film, Best script, Best actress (Kelly MacDonald) – I know Bill is missing here, he wasn’t even nominated, but we all know that he made the film – Best film).

If you like to find out what you think, go.

Lawrence in The Cafe
Lawrence (Bill Nighy) in The Cafe

On a day where my head nearly explodes because so many things are flying around in it, I knew I wouldn’t be able to come up with something decent to write. One could discuss if the stuff I normally tend to write is decent, but let’s not get into that right now.

On days like this, it’s nice to let other people do the writing for me.

Miwian.nl has participated in TGITC on tour project and just written her review of The Girl In The Cafe (in Dutch only) , and I am very pleased to read that she too finds it a fantastic film. It makes my day.

The Girl In The Cafe on her way to Denmark

The Girl In The CafeKarin, from met-k.com has written a very nice review about The Girl In The Cafe (both in English and in Dutch !), which is of course a very nice start of the week for me.

“The film moved me and let me think. About life and it’s chance meetings. How people seem to meet and go together in their journeys and stay or leave. Laurence is the shy and insecure man who feels trapped in his life and job. And Gina is just pure and wants to live in the purest of ways. Eventhough she takes risks. Eventhough she might lose the things she loves so much.”

Read her whole review at met-k.com. A big thank you to Karin for participating !

The Girl will step on the plane again soon and fly to Denmark, where she will accompany Bjoern for a while.

TGITC – on tour – now in the USA

The Girl In The CafeAfter a short visit to my ex hometown (Aarhus), the Girl actually crossed the ocean, and she is currently staying with Jason in the USA, who is taking good care of her.

Jane saw the film, and wrote the following review:

Hugh Grant meets Bob Geldof

In what starts out as yet another romantic comedy vis-?-vis shy, slightly awkward man meets young girl, falls in love, overcomes various obstacles and all ends well, the viewer is mercifully and happily surprised when this film turns out to be highly political with a strong message that every voice counts in the fight against poverty in the world. According to the film it is a battle that can be won if the Western world sets its mind to it.

The message is delivered in an often fun and easy manner, which makes it less dogmatic and more agreeable, nevertheless, the subject matter is never taken lightly and it is clear that the problems of the world ought to be taken more seriously.

Having been pleasantly surprised by the quality and substance of this film I strongly recommend other ignorants to watch it ? sooner rather than later!

Having somewhat questioned Ingrid?s taste in films in the past; I will no longer treat her recommendations with a pinch of salt. Thank you Ingrid for giving us the opportunity to watch this great film.

Well what can I say, another person that seems to love the film, so I can’t be anything else than very pleased about that. A big Thank You to Jane for participating in this humble project.

The Girl In The Cafe travels on again

The Girl In The CafeThe Girl In The Cafe has now arrived at Woordenaar

Anne has seen the movie, and she wrote the following review:

Okay, I have to admit I wasn’t completely objective about this movie. Being a fan of BBC productions, accents, movies like’ Lost in Translation’ and… Bill. Add the enthusiasm of Ingrid and what do you get? High expectations! And I wasn’t disappointed. Not in the least.
I liked the movie, I liked Bill, the only man who gets away with 356 ‘erm’s’ in about 90 minutes.
The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that I wasn’t allowed to copy it.
So I watched it twice : Thanks Ingrid!

Anne

Anne rated the film with a 9 (out of 10).

TGITC – on tour

Say what ?

The Girl In The CafeThe Short Version:
I think this is a wonderful and important film that needs to be seen by as many people as possible. That’s why I decided to send my The Girl In The Cafe DVD on a tour. The Girl has been on tour for more than a year now, she has visited more than 60 people already, and is planning to visit people in 20 (and counting) different countries. If you want to participate all you have to do is send an email to be put on the list. And when the film gets to you, you watch it, write a review on your blog (or send it to me if you don’t have a blog) and send it to the next person on the list.

The mighty Bill Nighy has called this project “very cool” and “very admirable”. And writer Richard Curtis is “thrilled” about this project.

Have a look at where the girl has been and will go on the world map here.

I was amazed by the number of people who either don’t know this film at all or have heard of it but have not seen it. And since this film made a big impression on me, I thought it was a nice idea to share it, and have other people to see it too. It is not only a great romantic comedy, it’s also a film with an important message.

And apart from people not knowing the film (which is forgivable to a certain extent), there seem to be people around on this planet, believe it or not, who do not know who Bill Nighy is! Now that is what I would call an emergency situation, a situation I had to do something about.

The script for the film is written by award-winning screenwriter Richard Curtis. You probably know him from Notting Hill, Love Actually (!), Bridget Jones, Four Weddings and a funeral. He doesn’t need any further introduction does he. So you get Bill Nighy, Kelly McDonald in a film with a very important message, by Richard Curtis, it can’t get any better than that! You can watch it as a very amusing and well-played rom-com, and you can learn a bit about G8 and what’s going wrong in the world too.

So – The Girl In The Cafe promotion campaign was born, my The Girl In The Cafe DVD went travelling.

Is this a sleazy way to promote your blog?
No. You don’t even have to link to my blog if you don’t want to, you can still participate. I just want to promote an in my opinion important and also fantastic film, and also support and promote the makepovertyhistory.org campaign. Maybe you already know everything about G8, the millennium goals, and aid, debt and trade, good, you can still enjoy the film. Maybe you didn’t, great, I didn’t really know that much before I saw this film either, so maybe it will clear up some things about all this for you too. It did for me.

So now you want to see don’t you? (Of course you do!)
Easy, just send me a nice mail telling me that you want to be put on the list, and write your postal address. All it will cost you is a stamp to send it to the next person.

The film is in English, and does only have English subtitles.

The Rules
If you want to participate in this project, you accept the following simple rules:

  • You watch the film (wowee – this really is the best part of it all)
  • You write a review about this film on your weblog and send me a link to it. (In English would be very nice, but if that’s a problem, use your own language) If you don’t have a weblog, you can send your review to me by email, then I’ll post it here.
  • After you have seen the DVD you promise to pack the Girl nicely, give her a kiss on the cheek and send the DVD to the next person about a week after receiving it; I will supply you with the name and address. And please send me a mail after you have done so. (This just to keep track on where The Girl is hanging around)
  • You may not make a copy of the DVD. You may lend, but not keep.

Any questions, remarks, comments, complaints? Send me an e-mail.
That’s it! Anyone can join in ! And go spread the word !
