The Girl In The Cafe was made in 2005 as a part of the makepovertyhistory.org campaign. The film got broadcasted just before the G8 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the Russian Federation. Together, those countries represent 66.5% of the world economy) meeting in Scotland, and a fictional G8 meeting is big part of the film.

This year the G8 meeting is going to be helt in St. Petersburg in July. A lot of promises were made at the previous G8 meeting. And to make sure those powerful people keep their promises, Sir Bob asks you to send President Putin an email. To remind him to keep Africa on the agenda. If they do, 4 million lives a year could be saved by 2010. If they don’t, many millions will die of preventable disease and hunger.

As Sir Bob writes:
It’s not rock n roll. It’s poverty.

It’s not glamour or celebrity. It’s death and disease.

It’s not Bob and Bono. It’s you and it’s them.

It’s us.

Mainly for readers in Denmark :
I just got confirmed from Go-Card that The Girl cards 1 + 2 haven’t been out in any cafe’s yet !
The Girl has only been enjoying McFlurries (as she adores Icecream) in the MacDonalds restaurants in Denmark until now.

On Thursday (2 days from now) the cards will be printed for Cafe distribution. And they will be distributed to The Cafe’s in the coming 2 months.

Sorry to all of you who have been looking out for The Girl in The Cafe’s ! I didn’t really know that MacD was so far ahead in receiving the cards.

So – have a look the coming weeks, if you want to meet The Girl In The Cafe. I have to say : I still think it’s incredibly cool that The Girl is going to be in the Cafe’s. And I would still like to hear from anyone who spots her in a Go Card stand. A picture of it would be ultimately cool !

I admit that it is a bit crowded in my room at the moment, with all The Girls. But how cool to come home from work, and to find The Girl number 3 in my mailbox. This postcard was the very first drawing I made, a sleepless night in January. And so many good things have happened since then.
I redid the card for the postcard version, and this card is definetely one of my personal favorites.

(A BIG thank you to Gocard for sending these postcards all the way to London).

Minor update Oh I forgot to say that I actually sold my flat in Denmark this week. Which makes a very nice connection to the sleepless night in January, as I had just started selling my flat there. It has taken a long time, but nevertheless, things are going as planned. And the girl is home. In London.

The Girl In The CafeAfter a short visit to my ex hometown (Aarhus), the Girl actually crossed the ocean, and she is currently staying with Jason in the USA, who is taking good care of her.

Jane saw the film, and wrote the following review:

Hugh Grant meets Bob Geldof

In what starts out as yet another romantic comedy vis-?-vis shy, slightly awkward man meets young girl, falls in love, overcomes various obstacles and all ends well, the viewer is mercifully and happily surprised when this film turns out to be highly political with a strong message that every voice counts in the fight against poverty in the world. According to the film it is a battle that can be won if the Western world sets its mind to it.

The message is delivered in an often fun and easy manner, which makes it less dogmatic and more agreeable, nevertheless, the subject matter is never taken lightly and it is clear that the problems of the world ought to be taken more seriously.

Having been pleasantly surprised by the quality and substance of this film I strongly recommend other ignorants to watch it ? sooner rather than later!

Having somewhat questioned Ingrid?s taste in films in the past; I will no longer treat her recommendations with a pinch of salt. Thank you Ingrid for giving us the opportunity to watch this great film.

Well what can I say, another person that seems to love the film, so I can’t be anything else than very pleased about that. A big Thank You to Jane for participating in this humble project.

Okay, I have to admit I wasn’t completely objective about this movie. Being a fan of BBC productions, accents, movies like’ Lost in Translation’ and… Bill. Add the enthusiasm of Ingrid and what do you get? High expectations! And I wasn’t disappointed. Not in the least.
I liked the movie, I liked Bill, the only man who gets away with 356 ‘erm’s’ in about 90 minutes.
The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that I wasn’t allowed to copy it.
So I watched it twice : Thanks Ingrid!

I don’t know exactly where I got the inspiration from, it suddenly was there. OK this triggered me a bit, and so did this film and this one too. I got ideas from listening to music, and many of them are a direct interpretation of a song. Making them absolutely relaxes me, and is something that seems to tame the bouncing balls for a short while, which is rather nice.

After making quite a lot of them, I got (another) very crazy idea. Wouldn’t it be really cool to leave Denmark, leaving behind some kind of Goodbye (and thanks for all the fish) note. After my London decision I have learned that silly ideas sometimes can have great results, so I contacted Go-card. Go-Card is a free postcard service, distributing postcards to all the cafe’s in Denmark. Most of them are commercial postcards, but they do support artists too, and give them a chance to publish their work for free through these postcards.

The bad news is, there isn’t any official soundtrack available. But the good news is that you can find the 2 songs that make up 90% of the soundtrack of this film.

2 songs from the soundtrack of the Girl of the Cafe that made an everlasting impression:

Sigur Ros – Starálfur (islandic for Staring Elf) from the album ágætis byrjun (”an alright start”). (Download Starálfur free and legal from Sigur Ros’ website : click here).

Damien Rice – Cold Water from his album O. You can watch a videoclip of a live version of this song here.

The song that’s playing as they walk down the corridor to the hotel room on their first night in Reykjavik is ‘Somewhere there’s an Island’ by Seaman Dan. You can hear a sample of it here.

The beautiful movie soundtrack is composed by Nicholas Hooper, who also will compose music for the upcoming Harry Potter movie : Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Nicholas Hooper has also composed music for other Nighy delights like State of Play and The Young Visiters.

Nicholas Hooper won a BAFTA Award in 2006 for Best Original Music for The Girl In The Cafe.

TGITC – on tour

Say what ?

The Girl In The CafeThe Short Version:
I think this is a wonderful and important film that needs to be seen by as many people as possible. That’s why I decided to send my The Girl In The Cafe DVD on a tour. The Girl has been on tour for more than a year now, she has visited more than 60 people already, and is planning to visit people in 20 (and counting) different countries. If you want to participate all you have to do is send an email to be put on the list. And when the film gets to you, you watch it, write a review on your blog (or send it to me if you don’t have a blog) and send it to the next person on the list.

The mighty Bill Nighy has called this project “very cool” and “very admirable”. And writer Richard Curtis is “thrilled” about this project.

I was amazed by the number of people who either don’t know this film at all or have heard of it but have not seen it. And since this film made a big impression on me, I thought it was a nice idea to share it, and have other people to see it too. It is not only a great romantic comedy, it’s also a film with an important message.

And apart from people not knowing the film (which is forgivable to a certain extent), there seem to be people around on this planet, believe it or not, who do not know who Bill Nighy is! Now that is what I would call an emergency situation, a situation I had to do something about.

The script for the film is written by award-winning screenwriter Richard Curtis. You probably know him from Notting Hill, Love Actually (!), Bridget Jones, Four Weddings and a funeral. He doesn’t need any further introduction does he. So you get Bill Nighy, Kelly McDonald in a film with a very important message, by Richard Curtis, it can’t get any better than that! You can watch it as a very amusing and well-played rom-com, and you can learn a bit about G8 and what’s going wrong in the world too.

So – The Girl In The Cafe promotion campaign was born, my The Girl In The Cafe DVD went travelling.

Is this a sleazy way to promote your blog?
No. You don’t even have to link to my blog if you don’t want to, you can still participate. I just want to promote an in my opinion important and also fantastic film, and also support and promote the makepovertyhistory.org campaign. Maybe you already know everything about G8, the millennium goals, and aid, debt and trade, good, you can still enjoy the film. Maybe you didn’t, great, I didn’t really know that much before I saw this film either, so maybe it will clear up some things about all this for you too. It did for me.

So now you want to see don’t you? (Of course you do!)

Bill Nighy in The Girl In The CafeThe Girl In The Cafe is part og the Makepovertyhistory.org project.
And you can’t get away from it, this film has a political message too. Quite an important one.

If you don’t like that in a film, don’t worry, focus on the fantastic acting performance of Bill Nighy. In Love Actually I found him slightly odd, but funny, but after The Girl in The Cafe he has been rocketing into my “The coolest guys on earth” top 10. What a fantastic actor.

The Girl in the Cafe did remind me a bit of the atmosphere in Lost in Translation.
And it is a tv film, it hasn’t been out in the cinemas.

No doubt in my mind, this is the best film of 2005 for me.
